My first kitchen project
This was my first real big project.
I needed a new kitchen because I just moved into this new apartment in 2018.
The walls and all the space was like a blank canvas to me.
So I began to plan the new layout for this kitchen. A simple L-shape would do.
There was enough space to work in the kitchen and I didn't need a table
(even tho I had one), because I mostly ate at my computer table or in the living room.
Most parts were re-used of my old kitchen from IKEA, but I didn't liked the white optics.
The plan was a nice rustic look. Also I wanted a saloon door to the kitchen.
The inspiration I found on Pinterest, where I saw a picture with a nice stone arch and wooden saloon doors in it.
I loved it.
So I began the project with sanding the whole fronts.
I also bought some garden fence boards, metal bands and paint from the hardware store.
After the sanding I painted all wood parts in a warm brown color.
After everything was dry, I cut the front pieces from the metal bands into pointed ends and drilled some holes to attach them to the garden fences.
The wooden parts got a nice oil finish.
I covered the white walls with wallpapers I found on the internet.
Next I needed to figure out how to attach the doors in the kitchen.
For that I needed to build a frame with some wood beams.
So back to the hardware store where I also picked up some hinges too.
They got attached to wood beams with some angle on the existing wood beam on the top.
I would have loved to fix it at the bottom too, but since the flat was rented it needed to be removable. With the frame finished I installed the doors.
The hinges were special saloon hinges, so the doors would open in each direction.
After that I covered the in-between of the beams with a net. On it I glued styrofoam bricks, that I ordered from the internet.
During the process of building the frame, I decided I also want a pass through.
After the arch was built, a friend of mine helped me with the painting, because the bricks were white.
I really liked the result. :)
Then I attached all the fronts of the kitchen on all cupboards and installed the hardware.
I also added a towel rail in form of a stick.
Now I needed some place to put my pots and pans.
For that I got a wooden beam, some hooks and a chain from the hardware store.
I cut the beam to the appropriate length and placed some hooks on top for the chains and on the bottom for my pans and pots.
For my plates and cups I built this shelf.
I found the wood on eBay and got it delivered to my apartment.
But the wooden board had a woodworm inside (what I didn't know at the time).
So I cut it to the appropriate length and drilled some holes for the ropes.
I got them, you guessed it, from the hardware store.
To store my wine glasses I had the cool idea to make some small slots in the board and fill them with some felt. It worked great.
I also added some little lights in the bottom of the top board.
They weren't the most practical, but looked cool in the dark.
After I realized that there was a woodworm in the shelf,
I dismantled it and placed the wood in my car.
It was summer at the time and the heat killed the woodworm. (They die at 55°C)
The last thing I added was the light.
For that I used the offcut from the pan-hanger beam.
I attached some chains to it and drilled some big holes for some LED spots on the bottom.
Overall I was happy how the kitchen turned out.
But this was only the beginning of my wood working journey.
