Build-in closet with table
Shortly after the horse cabinet another friend ask me for a closet for her apartment.
The apartment was on the top floor under the roof.
So she had not enough space for a dining table either. My idea was to combine the closet and the table in one.
The project also contains of two closets but the second one isn't finish yet.
At the time wood was really expensive so we choose blockboard for the closet.
It is sturdy and contains mostly full wood not like plywood with a veneer which you mostly find in cheap furniture.
The blockboard was still expensive but a good alternativ. I also bought some construction wood for the feet of the closet.
With the materials bought it was time to start building.
First I did some measurements and made a plan how I envision the closet.
Since my workshop wasn't big enough for such kind of project I needed to built it outside under the carport.
This was a problem since I was dependent on the weather to work. Luckily I started in early summer but still I couldn't get much done in the times that were available to me.
Also the big sheets of blockboard were hard to manage by myself.
In the end I was able to cut the construction wood to the appropriate length and made some slots at the bottom for the blockboard parts.
After many hours I finally had a rough shape of the closet.
Next I cut the middle part of the closet.
Since she didn't want any drawers, this was pretty simple.
At this point most of the material was cut and I had a bit more room in the workshop. So after many rearranging of tools and such I was able to fit the closet into my workshop.
With the tops finished it looked like a closet.
Next I wanted a cool engraving on the feet of the closet.
So I draw the design on the wood and made a jig to cut it out with a router.
This part was very tedious and time consuming.
But the result speak for itself.
I was very pleased how it turned out.
The color should be a dark brown. So I stained all parts with paint.
At the time I considered leaving the top part of the engraving with a lighter color but decided against it, since it should be only a small detail without to much focus.
Also the combination of the paint and the blockboard looked really cool.
I finished everything with oil varnish.
After that it was time to ship it to her and it fit perfectly in the corner.
Only the table was left at this point.
Since this already took about a year to build I had a little surprise for her.
I know she didn't want drawers but I thought it would be cool to have something to hide things from plain sight. So I made some drawers without attachments, so she could put them wherever she wants them.
Early in the project I made these nobs from pinecones and epoxy.
I also made a counterpart for the table to rest on.
To put it on the beam I drilled two holes through it.
Unfortunately the holes were on the position of the metal support for the beam. So I had to drill new ones.
The table is also a blockboard which on the one end had a cutout for some hinges.
The rest was surrounded with a aluminium border.
It was tricky because I didn't had clamps that were long enough for the whole table. But in the end I got it on it.
