My bedstead
A bit over a year after the bamboo bike I tackled my biggest project yet.
No, not the bedstead, but a house which I bought in the meantime. And after many months of renovation I also needed a bed to sleep in my new home
A lot has changed since then. For example I have a garden, where I can do stuff.
Like debark some logs. Four to be exactly.
I bought these from the hardware store.
The logs are dry and ideal for the project I planned to do.
After all four logs were debarked, I cut them with my chainsaw.
First I cut two of them to the right length and arranged them over the other two.
Then I marked the logs, were they met.
I cut the section half way through, so that the logs fitted into each other.
After everything looked good, I needed the cutout for the grating.
So I brought it outside and put it over the logs.
Then I roughly traced the outline of the grating.
For the cutout I used the chainsaw, it worked ok.
Next time I would use a jig to make the cuts with a circular saw,
to have a perfectly straight edge.
But since the logs weren't straight, this wasn't a big problem.
With everything in place it was time for painting.
I stained everything with a mahogany color.
The little slats beside the logs were used in the house,
but I stained them too to save time.
After it dried, I sealed everything with a linseed oil varnish.
To put everything together I used some threaded inserts and screws.
I also added some adjustable feed. All was looking good. But for some reason I ordered the wrong size of the mattress.
I got it replaced and everything worked out in the end. It is very comfy and I like the style of the bedstead.
