A place to eat

Now that I had a place to sleep, I needed also somewhere i can cook food.

For that I wanted a kitchen island. I was really charmed from the idea that you can walk around it and cook wherever you want.

At the time epoxy tables where on the rise.

So I decided that the kitchen top should be a from epoxy.

First I build a frame from wood and burned the edges from some wood boards.

So far so good. But plenty problems were coming in the next weeks.

Since I had no experience with epoxy pours many things went wrong.

First I sealed the bottom with plastic bags and tape.

Of course it wasn't sealed enough. So i ruined my freshly painted workshop floor.

After the leaks were fixed i tried again.

After everything was dry I sanded everything, which was really hard, because the epoxy on the bottom wasn't cured enough. So the sandpaper clogged.

In the end I managed to clean everything up and it looked awesome.

I painted the wooden frame and gave everything a last coat of epoxy.

The next thing I did, was the cutout for the sink and the hob.

For that i used a jigsaw and the template provided from the sink and the hob.

After a quick test fit the kitchen top was finished.

Next it was time for the kitchen frame.

The Frame was also from wood that I screwed together.

I bought some kitchen drawers from Ikea and a new stove.

Then I took measurement from it and planed the layout from the kitchen.

Under the stove i left space for a small drawer.

With the drawers and stove installed it was time to move to the front panels for the kitchen

I bought some aged wood from the hardware store. It was very expensive.

The boards I glued together. To align them I used wooden dowels and clamps.

After the two panels were dry I cut the to the right size and did the cutouts for the stove.

Then I screwed the panels from the inside to the frame.

To strengthen the drawers and doors I added a layer of plywood behind the panel.

When all was nice and secure I applied varnish to the whole thing.

For the hardware I used stings which were glued at the end to prevent them from open up.

The last thing was to attach the top to the frame which I also did with some screws from the inside.

And with that my kitchen island was ready.
